Today I celebrated with many of you as we honored our Class of 2021--the first class graduating from the San Diego College of Continuing Education. Our annual commencement included two activities: a joint virtual event with the San Diego Unified School District's adult schools, followed by a walk-up/drive-through parade at SDCCE Mesa College Campus. Hundreds of students joined the car parade as faculty, classified professionals and administrators cheered the graduates. Local media also covered this event. Thank you for participating in this special and symbolic tradition for our students.
In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month, SDCCE hosted the Asian Art of Origami with the University of California San Diego. Rising to Success Pathways learning community began recruitment for SDCCE's Apprenticeship Readiness Program designed to launch students into hands-on construction trade apprenticeships by completing OSHA 10, CPR, and Apprenticeship Readiness certifications. The program includes 12 weeks of instruction inclusive of an 80-hour internship providing participants new and improved skills. The program is open to persons 18 and older. Career and College Transitions held a series of career opportunity workshops and coordinated a virtual employer spotlight for students looking for available jobs in the sewing/alterations and security industries.
Recently I participated with other SDCCE administrators in a virtual symposium hosted by the University of San Diego: Following Best Practices and Facts: Foster & Homeless Youth. In collaboration with the Mayor's Childcare and Education working group, information is being shared with the SDCCE community about jobs, internships, and expanded learning opportunities for youth. These opportunities are part of Mayor Gloria's push to provide youth with productive summer activities.
Have a restful and safe holiday weekend!
