This message is to follow through and communicate decisions made recently about two requests from SDCCE's Academic Senate that impact SDCCE's ongoing collaboration with the California Virtual Campus-Online Education Initiative (CVC-OEI), and current and future distance education plans.
Firstly, SDCCE's Academic Senate made a motion to allocate $200,000 for administration, classified professionals, and faculty to support the implementation and ongoing CVC-OEI Consortium member obligations, and subsequently requested that the administrative team examines funding resources to support this request, including the short- and long-term benefits and resources required to maintain the CVC-OEI agreement, and to present the findings and decision to the Academic Senate.
I am pleased to report that the administrative team supports this request and has identified funds to be allocated to this effort through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HERF). The actual amount and budget will be determined following the pilot project.
Secondly, SDCCE's Academic Senate recommended a redirection of a budget proposal from an outside vendor to instead be used toward in-house online resources, and to develop a long-term institution-wide distance education strategic plan that includes Academic Senate participation; development, and review, and would also allow the Academic Senate to review existing and future distance education endeavors and/or plans.
I am pleased to report that the administrative team also supports this request and has identified funding (also through HERF) to support a parallel track of internal support for instructional design. Steps have already been taken with the continuation of faculty support through Distance Education mentorship, adding internal design support and open educational resources support, and purchased software such as CidiLabs.
Thank you for your participation in the Academic Senate, and in our participatory governance structure.
