Dear Colleagues,

Last week, three SDCE campuses held events and luncheons to celebrate classified professionals. More than 75 faculty, staff and administrators joined the long-standing traditional celebration of the annual Classified Service awards. The SDCE Foundation hosted the quarterly Foundation Advisory Committee with more than 20 community representatives from nonprofits, unions, and businesses in San Diego, including the San Diego Council on Literacy, Sheet Metal Works Local 206, and Cesar Chavez Service Clubs, Inc. The monthly SDCE Foundation Board of Directors meeting was also held.

SDCE hosted the second annual Education Celebration for the Community at the Educational Cultural Complex (ECC) last week. The event was in partnership with the San Diego Unified School District and focused on providing information about career training programs and college transition options to current and potential SDCE students. SDCE’s Historical Preservation Committee met to continue plans for having the ECC campus designated as a historical landmark. President Turner Cortez hosted a tour of ECC with Darwin Fishman, active supporter of Black Youth San Diego, which included a meeting to discuss potential collaboration. President Turner Cortez attended the Union of Pan Asian Communities dinner and also represented SDCE with other SDCCD leaders at the Harvey Milk Diversity breakfast, the largest Harvey Milk celebration in California.

On Saturday, students in the SDCE Automotive Technician certificate program who received scholarships and awards attended a special celebration at the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park. The event recognized the outstanding success of the students and introduced them to museum’s CEO, Mr. Herb Johnson, who is well connected in the community. Special thanks to Sam Phu, Program Chair and Andrei Lucas, Program Dean for their coordination and leadership to plan this event for automotive students.

Have a wonderful commencement week and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday to celebrate our graduating students!
