In the new year, SDCE has plans to drastically expand educational programming for homeless students as the Rising to Success (RtS) pilot program with the San Diego Rescue Mission and Veterans Opportunities Program (VoP) expands to a partnership with dozens of agencies that serve this populations of San Diego residents. Over the past year, we have served/are serving approximately 220 students in this program (roughly 60 students from the Rescue Mission and 160 students from VoP). San Diego Gateway to College and Career (SDG2CC), which serves students under 25, recently reported that 20 percent of their 150 students are also homeless.
This year, we will built the infrastructure to grow RtS and SDG2CC program to serve thousands of homeless students and opportunity youth. I am most grateful that we are able to make a difference in the lives of all the students we serve. I have also joined a regional committee convened by the San Diego Workforce Partnership to replicate the aforementioned student equity programs to develop a third program that will focus on restorative justice for the formerly incarcerated.
We have so much to be thankful for this year as an institution. Enrollments are strong; the budget is solid; we are hiring more and more contract employees; and student completions are through the roof. This past year, SDCE ranked fourth out of 116 institutions in the California Community College system in outcomes for Strong Workforce. We should be extremely proud of the work we do each day. Thank you for all you do to make a difference!
I want you to know how grateful I am to serve as the president of San Diego Continuing Education. I also want to express my appreciation for each of you and gratitude to have the opportunity to serve alongside you. I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving and a joyous Native American Heritage Day.
