Dear Colleagues,

Assemblymember Shirley Weber, Ph.D., recognized SDCE faculty Sam Phu, as a recipient of the 79th District's Annual Salute to Men Making a Difference. Dr. Weber’s yearly celebration honors men who have made significant contributions to southeastern San Diego through education and activism. Sam has been teaching at SDCE for 10 years and also currently serves at the Program Chair for Automotive and Skilled Trades.

This week, SDCE received approval from the state to offer several new courses. I would like to thank Desiree Payne, SDCE's Curriculum Analyst, faculty Richard Gholson, SDCE's Curriculum Chair, the SDCE Curriculum Committee, program faculty and program deans named below who supported this critical work. New courses and programs include:

Two short-term ESL certificate programs: 1) ESL Grammar Program and 2) ESL Language Reading Program; each consisting of two courses. Thank you to Jan Forstrom, Janet Foster, Nonna Sadoudi, Beth Bogage, Bryan Hicks the writers of the Grammar Program and Maria Allan, Jan Forstrom, Janet Foster the writers on the ESL Reading Program, also ESL Program Chair Corrine Layton and Dean Barbara Pongsrikul, Ph.D. for their work and leadership in this process.

A short-term Health Unit Coordinator program consisting of two courses: 1) Medical Terminology and 2) Health Unit Coordinator Basics. Thank you to faculty Kathy Campbell and Dean Cassandra Storey for their work and leadership in this process.

Additionally, this week SDCE received confirmation that the Automotive program is certified as a Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) Certified Training Institution and will begin offering smog check training courses. Thank you to Dean Andrei Lucas, faculty Bryan Perrin and Program Chair Sam Phu for their leadership to bring this new certification to SDCE.

The SDCE Foundation Board of Directors met to continue focus on three priorities: 1) replicating SDCE’s extremely successful Apprenticeship Readiness Program, 2) planning the SDCE Employee Giving Campaign, and 3) improving the SDCEats Farm to Family Fair and on-campus food pantry.

In recognition of World Refugee Day, the Copley-Price Family YMCA is sponsoring a free public event on Saturday to celebrate and recognize the refugee community in San Diego. SDCE Outreach will have a table with information about free classes and programs. Deans Crosby, Crosby Howell, and Lewis attended the League for Innovation conference in Arizona.
