Professor Tom Smerk

I am a professor of Business Information Technology for the San Diego Community College District where I am in my 29th year with the District. I am currently serving as Assistant Program Chair for our Office Systems division. My main focus is to train adults to gain employment as office workers and administrators. My favorite topics are Windows 7, Internet topics, Office Procedures and Web Page Design. In the past, I have taught a wide variety of classes (too numerous to list!) but including Microsoft Office, office skills, hard disk management, MIDI, "Topic-In-A-Day," virtual assistant, graphics, DOS, Windows and more! I helped install and set up the first instructional network at the Midway Campus and was one of two network administrators. I designed the first SDCCD web page when a committee I was serving on helped the District obtain Internet access for the first time. I trained faculty, staff and administrators for all campuses and colleges on how to use the Internet. I also teach an online Virtual Assistant class for Grossmont College where I have been employed from1995 to 2015. I have also taught other Small Business Management classes in the past and have experience in the industry. I offer a variety of services as a Virtual Assistant, but I specialize in document editing, proofreading, web page design, business management, consulting and developing online training to complement textbooks.

I began a part-time job in January 2013 as International Editor for “CQ Amateur Radio Magazine” where I write a monthly column called “CQ World Wide” as well as occasional feature articles. My column began with the April 2013 issue. In addition, I am the Public Information Officer for “Skywarn,” a division of the National Weather Service, for the SW California area which includes four counties; San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino. Although I am now retired from the music business, I have been a professional musician since 1965 and have six CDs available for sale or download on my entertainer web site at http://musician.tomsmerk.com. I have a few books that I am writing that I might actually get published some day!

My hobbies are amateur radio (see my ham radio web site at http://AA6TS.com), weather, traveling, Bible study, estate sales, video poker and classic autos & muscle cars. I am a member of Sheriff's Auxiliary Communications Service, ARES, CERT, Skywarn, California Disaster Corps, Southwestern Skywarn REACT, and the Mountain Empire Amateur Radio Club. I am married and have four children, one deceased and three living out of state. I welcome your email about our classes, if you have any questions, or if you want to share information about any of my interests.
