Dr. Stephen Farnow is an example of how people today are using the services of the California Community College system to develop and apply practical skills. Dr. Farnow has a Ph.D. in physics. He returned to Continuing Education for hands-on classes in digital media production skills.
After taking Photoshop classes at Continuing Education, Dr. Farnow wrote a how-to book on Photoshop. He started looking for practical books on how to use Photoshop, but found that none of them were quite what he needed. “They are all quite long—encyclopedic actually—and everyone seemed to be looking for something concise to just get going,” he said. Farnow self-published his book using InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop—all software he learned to use by taking Continuing Education classes. He created a web page to market the book using Dreamweaver, Flash, and CSS—more learning from Continuing Education.
