Certified Nursing Assistant Program

Nursing Assistant Training

The Nursing Assistant Training program is a 260 to 300-hour course. The purpose of the training is to prepare students for the State Certified Nurse Assistant examination, which tests for knowledge of theory and applied skills. In order to successfully complete this training, it is advised that students enter the program with strong reading skills (9th grade or higher). Students are also required to have a physical and T.B. exam before entering the program. The Nursing Assistant Training course covers the following topics:

  • Requirements for nurse assistant certification, professionalism and ethics
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Promoting patients' rights and independence
  • Rehabilitative/restorative care
  • Medical/surgical asepsis; standard procedures
  • Emergency procedures and prevention of catastrophe
  • Resident care skills and procedures
  • Body mechanics; nutrition
  • Vital signs; weights and measures; observation and charting
  • The long-term-care resident; death and dying

Upon successful completion of the course, students may apply to take the State Certified Nurse Assistant examination. Once students have passed this exam, they become certified as Nurse Assistants by the State of California.

Where do C.N.A.s work and what do they earn?
C.N.A.s work in long-term care facilities such as convalescent hospitals, hospitals, through an agency, or in a private home.   Starting wages range from minimum wage to $14.00 per hour.   The demand for Certified Home Health Aides is very high.  Entry-level wages in Home Health range are usually $10-14 per hour.   Many positions have full medical benefits, 403b savings plans and tuition reimbursement.

Where can I go if I want to get further training?
San Diego City College offers 2-year Associate Degree programs for the Licensed Vocational Nurse (L.V.N.) and/or Registered Nurse (R.N.). By starting as a C.N.A., students gain clinical experience required for nursing programs as well as valuable insight into the profession. When a student decides to pursue further education, he or she should speak with a counselor.
